Review: Land Girls

This book is like Chick Lit meets World War II. Turns out that it's a nice match!

I've never heard of WLA but I found it fascinating - the Rosie Riveter of England. Hard, manual labor and rural living are huge changes for land girls but they attack every task head on and end up blossoming on the farm. Definitely a feel good book. Now I just need to hit google to find out what birth control was like in 1940's England because curiosity is killing me. The mention it briefly and it made me wonder. Apparently it isn't as modern a notion as I assumed!

Review: Anna and the French Kiss

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

I'm a sucker for any book that takes place at a boarding school. Throw in someone that utters words like "trousers" and "brilliant" and I can't help but love it.

This isn't just chick lit, but teen chick lit. While people probably expect these teen stories to be less 'feel good' than adult books, they aren't. It's the innocence and exuberance of youth mixed with lessons learned through love and friendship that make these stories so good.

And did I mention that people are wearing trousers? :)

Review: Dash & Lily's Book of Dares

I'm bookish. Thanks to Dash, I have decided to bring add more quirky and fun words to my conversations and I'm starting with one he used himself. Bookish. That's exactly what I am. And while I don't have an OED, I do treasure my dictionary with it's gilt edged, blue leather cover and hefty weight.

Excellent book. The story was one that I would have loved to have lived. It's a modern day fairy tale, complete with a quest for a missing boot. I loved Lily's extended family and Dash's friends. It was the kind of book that made you smile as you read it.

Review: One Fifth Avenue

One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell

I checked this out by mistake, to be honest. I've read The Devil Wears Prada and Lipstick Jungle and incorrectly thought this was by the author of Devil/Prada, not Lipstick Jungle. I started to read it and simply couldn't find enough interest to keep reading. I finally gave up and only realized when I looked up the author that I was blaming the wrong person.

I'm not a huge fan of chick lit but there are definitely stand-out authors in the field. I can read the vapid, easy to follow Sophie Kinsellas and enjoy the teen version with Sarah Dessen and I greatly enjoy them both. This book isn't chick lit, in my opinion. It was a waste of my time, however.

Review: The Room-Mating Season

The Room-Mating Season by Rona Jaffe

I had no expectations when I stumbled across this book in the library. In fact, I was surprised to see it classified as chick lit by other readers because it didn't strike me as a fun, quick, read poolside book. I liked the story and the characters. I enjoyed the transition through the years. Perhaps it's my age and the fact that I'm chronologically in the middle of the book. Those girls in the beginning? I knew them years ago. The girls turning 30? I know them. The girls turning 40? They're my peers. The girls turning 50? It makes me wonder where I'll be in another decade. As the years passed and the woman handled their affairs in such different ways I found myself curious about how they would end up.
