Review: Slow Cooker Revolution

Slow Cooker Revolution
Slow Cooker Revolution by Editors at America's Test Kitchen

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The recipes look fantastic. They are well-researched and I believe that many batches were made before recipes were finalized. However, I don't think I'll make a single recipe.

I use my slow cooker as a way to quickly and easily get food on the table when we get home from school and work. It would take me longer to prep these meals than it would to just come home and make dinner. This isn't a "quick" or "easy" or "simple" cookbook and it isn't designed for families that are out of the house for 8-10 houses each day. Too many complicated meals with cook times shorter than my work day.

My family has Survivor parties twice a year to kick off each new season. We take themed food and after 20+ seasons and multiple attendees, I have run out of ways to make snakes, turtles, beaches, huts and other Survivor items out of food. I came across this book on Amazon and thought it would be perfect. It was. While there are pages of trains, pirate ships, chess boards and popular party themes, my favorite sections were the Creepy-Crawlies and Woodland Creatures. They can renew Jeff Probst's contract for another 10 years now because I have enough ideas for all of the parties!

I also liked the holiday items. The Pilgrim hats are quick and easy and will be fun at Thanksgiving. Santa's sleigh will be cute at the Christmas dinner table and I have plans for eggs at Easter.

Extreme Pumpkins: Diabolical Do-It-Yourself Designs to Amuse Your Friends and Scare Your Neighbors by Tom Nardone

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book had so many excellent carving ideas that I can't decide what to do this year! The Property-Defender Pumpkin is incredible and it's top of my list but I don't want to stop there. If I can come up with a way to make fake fixings, I'm putting the hamburger pumpkin on the table as a centerpiece, too. Great book (and much better than it's sequel!)

Extreme Pumpkins II: Take Back Halloween and Freak Out a Few More Neighbors by Tom Nardone

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

It's almost pumpkin carving time and I was looking for new, creative ideas. This book did have ideas but most of them would be more appealing to 9 year old boys than any adult reader. Puke, poop, snot...yep, all there. I was looking more for clever than juvenile. That said, I did like the one with eerie writing and I think I can use that for the office pumpkin carving entry, and I'll be able to fashion a zombie out of one. It was ok.

Review: Think of a Number

Think of a Number
Think of a Number by John Verdon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A retired detective that never really got the job out of his soul is now turning pictures of serial killers into art. When an old friend asks for help, he obliges and allows himself to be drawn into a homicide investigation.

The process behind victim selection was a bit too over the top for me but I'm willing to overlook it as I figure I just can't think like serial killer. And the final drama was a little overdone, but again, it was a solid ending.

This was a solid police thriller with an "I can't put it down" effect. I enjoyed reading it and will look for the next Gurney book.

Review: The Hidden Staircase

The Hidden Staircase
The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My 7-year old daughter and I have been listening to Nancy Drew books for a few months - Clue Crew, Notebooks, etc. We're now working through the originals and I love sharing them with her. The innocence of the stories is a nice change and it gives us a mystery she can enjoy. She loves racing Nancy to the answer. We are starting to wonder when Helen leaves and Bess and George show up, though!

Review: Lunch Box: Creative Recipes for Everyday Lunches

Lunch Box: Creative Recipes for Everyday Lunches
Lunch Box: Creative Recipes for Everyday Lunches by Marie Breton

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book has the potential for much higher rankings from other readers. While it wasn't my style of food, it did have creative options for lunches. I was looking for ideas for kids' lunches, however, and this food isn't kid-friendly. Well, for some kids, I'm sure it is. Mine tend to have fairly typical kid tastes and this food wouldn't be appreciated in their lunches.

However, this could easily be a 5 star book for someone else.

Review: Sudden Death

Sudden Death
Sudden Death by Michael Balkind

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

My impression of this book:
Pro golfer throws tantrum
Pro golfer spends exorbitant amounts of money to show love
Pro golfer gets death threat
Pro golfer golfs
Pro golfer throws tantrum
Pro golfer spends exorbitant amounts of money to show love
Pro golfer gets more death threats
Pro golfer golfs
Over and over again. All that changed was what he was spending the money on.

After reading about 2/3 of the book I couldn't take anymore. I skipped to the end, found out who was writing the death threats, rolled my eyes and closed iBooks.

Review: Miss Marple's Final Cases: Complete & Unabridged

Miss Marple's Final Cases: Complete & Unabridged
Miss Marple's Final Cases: Complete & Unabridged by Agatha Christie

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I am a huge Agatha Christie fan and some of these short stories were up to her usual standards...but others weren't. Miss Marple's understanding of human nature is always impressive.

What ruined these stories for me was the reader. The first few are read by someone that sounds like they are trying multiple characters at once - a British accent, a lisp, an elderly woman and someone with a constant mouthful of drool. All in one voice. Luckily, the last two stories had other readers!

I already own (and love) The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook and was thrilled to find this mini book I can carry around with me on my iPod Touch. And it was FREE!

I'm making Triple Power Icy Lemon Pops this week and will make the Butterscotch Brew Slushies as soon as I have the ingredients on hand!

Review: Lunch Box Food

Lunch Box Food
Lunch Box Food by Sharon Dalgleish

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It wasn't the book I expected...but it does have a niche. If you are teaching a kids' health class or want to discuss nutrition with young children, this would be an excellent book. My fourth and second grader would be able to understand and discuss the book. I can't see any other purpose for reading this, but it would be excellent for this purpose.

Vegan Lunch Box: 130 Amazing, Animal-free Lunches Kids and Grown-ups Will Love! by Jennifer McCann

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Same disclaimer as before: I am not vegan. Or vegetarian. Just an eater looking for inspiration :)

This book was excellent for idea-finding and I now have a list of quick, easy, tasty lunch options for my family. In fact, I sat down tonight and planned this week's lunches and everyone will be enjoying hot packed lunches with proteins, fruits, veggies, grains and dairy! It was easy to convert the recipes to accommodate our food choices (although I'm sure that it wasn't Jennifer McCann's intention to help me figure out new meat dishes for lunches!)

Easy to read, filled with healthy options and great inspiration!

Review: The School Lunchbox Cookbook

The School Lunchbox Cookbook
The School Lunchbox Cookbook by Miriam Jacobs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My ability to come up with healthy packed lunches for school seems to have disappeared for the summer. I decided to check out different lunchbox books for inspiration.

This has been one of my favorites. The beginning of the book is information on healthy food choices, the dangers of children eating unhealthy foods, the advantage of making foods at home, etc. Nothing I blatantly disagree with as I'm one of those "real foods" people that prefer unprocessed, unbleached ingredients.

The recipes aren't filled with processed foods or hard to find ingredients. They are kid-friendly and easy to follow. My ideas for different sandwiches have grown. I feel like I could make everything in the book...and that even my picky eater would willingly eat about half of the foods. Most cookbooks have less than 10 real-life options for me so this is a great change.

The reason that this is a 4 star book instead of a 5 star book is because the author is a huge fan of disposable items and plastic. She recommends buying printed paper napkins and wrapping everything in plastic wrap. As a time saver, she suggests wrapping a month's worth of plastic silverware in paper napkins and sealing them with a sticker. Cloth napkins and metal silverware are such an easy change and reuseable containers aren't difficult. The wastefulness disappoints me...and it almost made me give the book 3 starts.

Review: The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer
The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I don't read lawyer books. It's a long-standing habit of mine. However, a friend of mine was reading Michael Connelly and raved about it so I checked it out.

I am so glad I did. Excellent book. The plot twisted and turned and I found myself nervously listening to parts, afraid that things would go wrong for Mickey. The reader was fabulous - as the book started, I thought, "Wow! That's actually what a shark lawyer would sound like!" and it helped push the book up even further in my estimation. I can't say much about the story as I don't want to hint at anything that would give away any of the surprises in the book.

I'm excited to see that Goodreads is listing this book as "Mickey Haller #1" because it suggests that we'll hear more about Mickey! I'll definitely read more!
